Texten nedan är ett avsnitt ur en reseskildring som skrevs av fransmannen Sieur de Diérville vid ett besök i Acadien 1699. Port Royal (numera Annapolis Royal) var den första franska bosättningen i Nova Scotia och anlades 1605. Texten är ursprungligen på franska och är till viss del skriven på vers. Att översätta den på ett rättvisande sätt blev mig övermäktigt men jag tror ändå att den som kan lite engelska förstår vad den handlar om.
Här beskrivs att jägaren befinner sig väl dold i ett gömsle, att hunden tollar lekfullt och att fåglarna lockas inåt. Det finns inget om hundens färg eller om den apporterar efter skottet. Däremot sägs det att metoden är väldigt effektiv när det finns gott om fågel och att jakten sker både vår och höst.
Vårjakt förekommer nästan inte alls nu för tiden men förr när jakten handlade om överlevnad var det naturligt. Eftersom tolling förefaller fungera allra bäst på våren var det säkert en effektiv metod för att få mat till sin familj.
